2012 – analysis of the Russian wine market

Imported wine stays a stable demand of the Russian customers. According to the official customs report the volume of imported wine to Russia augmented to 10,2% during the 1st half of 2012.

In the structure of import the leading positions are still kept by the biggest European producers – France, Italy and Spain. Nevertheless the share of French wine decreased from 22% to 18,5%, according to the data of the Russian custom the volume of French wine became 1300000 liters less in 2012. At the same time the importation of Spain wine increased to 1200000 liters, Italian – to 800000 liters. In spite of such a stability of the wine favorites importation of Moldavian and Ukrainian wine augmented significantly. For example the volume of import of Moldavian wine to Russia grew to 3800000 liters vs 2011. Total volume of imported for the last 5 months wine is 9500000 liters. Before the the ban to import due to pretenses from the responsible department for the same period this volume could achieve 11900000 liters of wine. Import from Ukraine showed a fast grow as well. A year ago this country was the 7th supplier of wine for Russia (6% of total import). In the beginning of the year 2012 the volume of import augmented more then twice (from 5300000 to 12800000 liters). Nowadays Ukraine takes the 4th place with 13,2%. By the way, the internal market of Ukraine for last 2-3 years has been suffering from the change of the structure of consumption – Ukrainians prefer home-made products. The production of wine in the country decreased for more than 50%, so for the Ukrainian wine-makers Russian market is rather important. Russian keep positive image of Ukrainian wine brands. At the same time Ukrainians supply qualified wine for a much lower price than the equal Western European or Northern American ones. Among the companies – importers there are several leaders. The biggest one is “Luding”, but comparing with previous year in the beginning of 2012 the volume of import of the company decreased to 34,3% and consequently the share diminished from 15,56% to 9,28%. Simultaneously the importers of Moldavian and Ukrainian wine got score. Five of them took place in the top-10 like Moldavian wine importers “Moro” and “Eco-Alco”, Ukrainian “Locus” and “Vastom” and an Abkhazian company “RusAlcoImport”. The biggest losses had the importers of German wines, the volume of import declined to 40 %. From the 1st of July 2012 wine-producing sector in Russia was blocked by an amendment of the law obliged the company to license 4 types of wine – natural, sparkling, liqueur and made of fruit. Currently the law united 9 types of wine covered by one license. Another innovation of the 1st of July was the obligation to put different labels to each of 4 types of wine. Their design is developed. The responsible people say that the old marks will be valid till January 2014.The equal situation had place at the end of 2011 when Russia Alcohol Regulation Department launched and action of re-license of the players of the market while the demands to get the permission documents became stricter. From their side the markets players accused the Department in loyalty to the bigger producers which can satisfy the demands easier. At the same time the functionary explained the measures as a way to struggle with false production. As result the quantity of the companies trading alcohol legally fell to 30%. As well as the production of wine and spirits – table wine making decreased to 10,5% vs 2010 (by 40 400 000 dal), vodka production to 9,5% (by 86 300 000 dal). Source – http://rosinvest.com
