Wine by a bank card

The deputy Oleg Mikheev proposed to the State Duma a bill to ban the sale of alcoholic drinks for cash.

In his opinion if alcoholic drinks will be bought only by credit cards, it will allow better control of the market and also complicate the sale of alcohol to persons under the age of majority.

The experts believe that these measures will contribute to the development of the informal spirits market.

The head of the branch of the analytical agency TSIFRRA Vadim Drobiz says «The ban of alcohol buying for cash only reduce the availability of legal alcohol to the public».

He also recalls that the residents of the advanced economies use bank cards more often than the Russians, but the level of alcohol consumption increases there too, and both among women and young people. «This is including the aftermath of the global economic crisis, «- he said.

In the opinion of the expert, the sale of alcoholic drinks only by credit card is not practiced in any country of the world.
And in essence the manipulation of payment options alcoholic drinks will not help to solve the existing problems, according to «Rossiyskaya Gazeta».

Germany is against

The Representatives of the German wine industry have expressed concern that the decision to lift restrictions on planting new vines in the EU would nullify the efforts aimed to stopping the overproduction of growth and quality.

At the end of June this year, it was announced that the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union will be amended.

Existing restrictions on planting vines will be lifted at the end of 2015. EU countries will be allowed to increase the area of vineyards, maximum of 1% per year until 2030.

Then the system will be reviewed again. «This is the biggest question in the wine world in Germany today — Steffen Schindler said, the marketing director of the German Wine Institute. Now we finally have a situation where there is no over-production, but this decision will put it at risk «We are afraid that production will increase in those areas where the vines just cultivated — he added, suggesting that the top regions will not probably be interested in increasing the acreage. I do not see the future of Germany in mass production. In other countries it turns out better».

Advocates of the new law argue that existing bans are an anachronism that deters the European wine industry in the global market.

The largest Australian harvest for the last 5 years

The wine harvest of 2013 was the largest over the past 5 years in Australia.

According to the Winemakers' Federation of Australia, WFA, it’s 10 percent more than the harvest in 2012. 1.83 tons of grapes were collected this year only.

The final indicators are contradicting to reports that the harvests are kept on the middle and lower-middle-level. In turn, this was due to the hottest and one of the driest summers in the history. «Great vintage is the result of the fact that this year there were no major disasters, neither sickness nor floods that affected the previous vintages. Also, this time there was enough water for irrigation «, — said the WFA. Prices of raw materials have continued to rise after the fall recorded in 2011.By now they had reached AU $ 499 per ton. This is the highest level since 2009.The demand for red grape will continue to grow. The average price rose by 13% to AU $ 619 per ton. The demand for white grape is also grown, but only slightly, by 2% to reach AU $ 388 per ton.

Wine is defined as an agricultural product

Farmers are engaged of their production, primary and further processing. The wine materials and waste of the wine industry are also included in the list of agricultural products.

The document states that to be agricultural products wines must be made by agricultural producers from their own grapes grown and processed in the territory of Russian Federation.

As they consider in Ministry of Agriculture, classification of the wine to the agricultural products will contribute to more efficient development of winemaking industry, as this will allow winemakers to use all preferences for farmers, «Interfax» reports.

Ukrainian wine-makers appeal for solution of the problems of the sector

Ukrainian vine-growers and wine-makers demand the government and the parliament to pay attention to the principal problems of the sector.

Between the most important there are lack of sensible state support, high cost of wholesales of wine (its cost is 500 thousands hryvnia and paid by the producers per year), and absence of free market of land.

They declared this at a press-conference in USIAS. «We address to the parliament with a demand to solve the vital questions. First of all this is the land question. The second one is the mechanism of state support restoration. And the third is the question of 500 thousands hryvnia cost of license, for us to have in the Ukraine not 70 wine-producers, and 70 thousand», — said the head of the department of development of gardening, vine-growing and wine-making of the department of land cultivation of the Ministry of Agricultural policy and Alimentary of the Ukraine Viktor Kostenko.

According to his words these problems don’t let Ukrainian vine-growing and wine-making to show their potential and to supply the country with enough quantity of wine. The data given by Mr. Kostenko, in average there are 4 liters of local wine per one Ukrainian, but the country can produce 10 times more.

The opinion of the wine-maker — the owner of the trade mark «Kolonist» — Ivan Plachkov, the most important question is land question. He offers to refuse the moratorium of privatization of lands under the old gardens and vineyards, as to grow real vineyards with vines older than 25 years is possible at proper lands.

The first deputy general director of the corporation of «Ukrvinprom» Vladimir Kucherenko remarked also that one of significant problems of the sector is high rate of excise. Participants of the press-conference are sure that Ukrainian wine has a quality not worse than European one. The sector is economically perspective but the state support and solution of the above problems Ukrainian vine-growing and wine-making will not develop actively.

For information: State Statistics give data of the volume of wine-materials produced in the Ukraine in 2012 was 23 million deciliters what is to 8,1% less than in 2011. 329,6% thousand tons of grapes of different varieties were processed what less than in 2011 to 6,9%.

A star of world foot-ball looking for a vineyard

French wine will be covered with a tax to decrease its consumption. Senators suppose that French people will not buy expensive alcohol, so they will stay sober and healthy.

The Ministry of health protection of the Fifth Republic has been proposing to increase taxes to all things of pleasure or provoking overweight.

«There is no nation sober that the French one», — wrote a half of a century ago the owner of the literary salon of Johann Schopenhauer. German people need beer, tobacco and bowling, and French people to become happy have to make a compliment to a lady to get grateful look as answer. Drink is not a habit in this case. French people even now occupy a place only in the fifth ten in the list of countries consuming strong spirits. As for wine, they drink more than 8 liters per person. This is the second rate after Luxemburg. Even a famous wine-maker and wine-lover Gerard Depardieu confessed to the «First Channel» that it is necessary to decrease the degree.

French people actually become more and more discreet. State propaganda learn to keep calmness and stay neutral in the questions of marriage, gastronomic habits, remarked a correspondent of «Commercant FM» in Paris Polina Myakinchenko. «There is a law, regulating the publicity of harmful products. Such advertising should have information about what in what quantity should be eaten per day, like six fruit or vegetables, or eat more healthy food, or eat less fat, sweet, salty and so on», — she said.

The practice shows that people are not ready to refuse tasty things. They will get favorite food at any rate. For example, an experiment with a tax to fat things was a failure. It was tried in Denmark. But at place of decrease of consumption of butter, cheese, milk and meat, citizens of Denmark started buying these products in neighbor Germany. And the money stayed there. And in year and a half, the State of Denmark decided to cancel this tax.

A star of world foot-ball looking for a vineyard

A famous Scottish foot-ball player and coach Alex Ferguson intends, as report British press, to buy a vineyard in France.

Ferguson will choose wine-making as occupation after leaving the post of the chief trainer of the «Manchester United».

Supposedly, the star of foot-ball could spend 2 million pounds or more than 3 million dollars to buy a wine-making household at Southern France. And the deal is planned to be concluded this summer.

Earlier sir Ferguson showed his love to wine. In an interview this year he has compared a Portugal foot-ball player Christian Ronaldo with Petrus 1961.
Allexander HallА, the head of the company Vineyard Intelligence, a consultant of vineyards sales in France stated that a future owner of a wine-making estate should think seriously before making such a choice.

According to the words of the expert in this case it is necessary to choose between relatively small piece of land in a famous appellation or a larger land but at a less outstanding place. Hall remarked that the role of appellation is very important for the price of a vineyard.

A collection-maker dream

Among all the collections of the world the most exciting are the ones of «liquid gold» or rare whisky bottles.

There are several brands of very-rare whisky made for some special historical dates or belonging to some outstanding people. Such bottles are sold at the auctions for crazy money. One of such brands is whisky Macallan, famous for products like whisky 1962 dedicated to the latest film about James Bond «Skyfall» or a bottle of Macallan 1926, closed in 1986 году. Recently a bottle of whisky 1951, distilled in 1926 attracted attention of the world as it went to a new owner for 40 460 dollars.

The bottle Macallan 1951 became a star of the auction Bonham’s Whisky, Cognac & Rare Spirits. Special interest to this lot was from buyers of the USA. However some East Asian, Australian, Brittish and even Scandinavian collection-makers took part in the auction.

At this auction another bottle of whisky was sold — Macallan — Lalique for 15 470 dollars. Not only the drink but an unusual decanter of crystal with a cork made such a price.

Russians tend to expensive vodka

Russian customers of vodka change their preferences to more expensive varieties of the strong drink. Such result gave a research of analytical agency Nielsen, comparing sales of February-March of 2013 vs 2012.

According to the data of the company sales of vodka of the price level from 190 to 215 rubles decreased to 3,5%. Sales of the category from 215–230 rubles went down to 1,4%. At the same time sales of this drink of 230–300 rubles per a bottle of 0,5 l increased to 2,3%, and the premium segment (more than 300 rubles) grew to 1,1%.

In spite of this change, the leadership is still kept by the 190–215 rubles segment getting 34,1% of the total vodka sector in February-March 2013. In this price category leaders are vodka Medoff (company «AlcoRuss»), «Starya MoSkwa» and «Prazdnichnaya» (from «Kristall»). Top-10 members are also «Gosudarev zakaz» («Synergy»), «Staraya marka» («Rosspirtprom») and oth. Among more expensive (230–300 rubles) the leader is Ukrainian «Khortitsa», «Talka» of Polish CEDC and «Myagkov» («Synergy»).

Curious that at the same time Russians started refusing so-called «tasty» vodka. This segment lost 1,4% in February-March 2013 vs 2012, getting 16,8%. Here in the segment 190–215 rubles the leader is «Berezovie brunki» followed by Medoff and «Straya marka». In a higher segment (230–300 rubles) «tasty» vodka top-10 contents «Tri starika» (of «Sordis»), cranberry, honey, lemon «Myagkov» and pepper-honey and birch Nemiroff.
The head of liqueur-vodka tasting committee of an International Exhibition «ProdExpo» Alexander Zaytsev consider the first rates of the rating of Nielsen well proved.

These changes are seen at a falling market of vodka. The fall started in this January when total vodka production decreased to 30% states Russian statistics, totally per quarter it went down to 25,4% vs the same period of 2012. Despite of this, sales of vodka and liqueurs in the 1st quarter of 2013 decreased to 7,8% only. Actually, now the stocks of vodka brought before New Year excise increase are sold.

The Ministry of the Agricultural Products of the Ukraine will support development of wine-making

According to the words of the Head of the Department of Development of gardening and vine-growing of the Ministry of the Agricultural Products Viktor Kostenko, the department will plant 1 thousand hectares of vineyards in 2013.

Mr. Kostenko remarked also that there following problems to solve in the wine-making sector: to cancel year license to wholesales of wine, getting which costs about 500 thousand hryvnia (about 1,9 million rubles); decide the question of the rent of lands for vineyards; develop a complex system of grants for support for plantation of new vineyards and for the wine-making industry in total.

According to the data of the Bureau of grape and wine in 2012 there were 70 licensed companies in the country, but in fact only 50 of them worked.
Representatives of the wine-making organizations ask deputies to support the initiative of the Ministry of the Agricultural Products concerning the cancellation of the license for the wholesales of wine, as this license blocks development of the wine-making sector, reports a Ukrainian edition ubr.ua.

12 million dollars for a false wine

Lay people of the Court of Manhattan lay out a verdict to oblige an Internet — magnat Eric Greenberg to pay 12 million dollars to a multimillionaire William Koch as a fine for sale of a false wine.

According to the words of the lawyer of Mr. Koch, John Huston, the multimillionaire spent about 5 million dollars for the lawyers service — the same as Mr. Greenberg did.

Mr. Koch first pretended to 10 million dollars, after the victory he said that the money would be invested into a fund to help those who had suffered from a «wine' or «auction» swindle. He also remarked that «everything stays unsaid» in this sector, so he was intended to clarify what was going on there.
The respondent called the verdict «disappointing». He insisted also that he hadn’t swindled as he had been considering the wine authentic and had offered a compensation to Mr. Koch, but the later had refused.

The list of forbidden sites can be completed by internet-shops selling counterfeit alcohol. A list of such shops is already prepared by the functionaries of the Russian Alcohol Regulation Department.

Currently they prepare necessary amendments to the actual law to let the Russian Alcohol Regulation Department to close such sites through the help of Russian Commercial Control Department.

Internet is rich of such sites, offering imported premium alcohol in jerry cans for a price several times lower than in a shop. The sites inform the customers that elite alcohol is imported in Russian in tanks and bottled inside the country, what is not true.

Vadim Drobiz, the director of the analytical agency of the sector ZIFFRA sates that internet-shops selling illegal alcohol should be closed and the owners punished according to the law regulations.

«The question of counterfeit of premium alcohol is very serious. The situation is well illustrated by a whiskey example: last year the difference of volumes of sales of this drink and the volume of import was 25–30%. It means that there are about 30% of counterfeit whiskey sold in the Russian market,« — says Mr. Drobiz. He remarked as well that in 2012 the volume of importation of elite alcohol in Russia dropped off from 25–30% till 10–12% due to increase of production of counterfeit drinks.

The ban of distance sales of alcohol exists in the Russian Federation from 2007. During the last 5 years different public organization tried to cancel this interdiction, but the State didn’t agree. The

supporters of the ban insist that the principal argument for its existance is impossibility to define the age of a customer and to control the prohibition of night sales of alcohol.

Wine-maker way

On the 3rd of May 2013 in the tasting room of the Academy of Sommelier Mozart Wine House under the support of East European Sommeliers and Experts Association a tasting of Miskhako wines took place. The Chief Wine-maker of the household leaded the event.

Wine-maker way

Roman Neborsky presented the winery and its products to the guests among whom there were the Don wine-makers, leading sommeliers of the city and connoisseurs.

The subject of the tasting was exclusives, so Roman showed not only the best dry white and red wines, but also sparkling wines, a sweet ice-wine and some old-house wines and a unique product, a sort of grappa which is produced not for sale.

After a presentation Roman answered the questions of the guests and Mozart Wine House couldn’t miss such a chance:

Mozart Wine House: Roman, in your words there are so much enthusiasm, it’s clear that your work is not just a job for you. What is your way of wine-maker?

Roman Neborsky: I graduated from the Kuban State Agricultural University, wine-making faculty and started to work as wine-maker. In 2005 I became the chief wine-maker of Miskhako. University gives the basis, and then it is communication and experience. I travel a lot, work with many people and try to get more experience to create my own style of wine-making. Before becoming the chief technologist of Miskhako I worked a lot with the person who occupied this post since the USSR. That is why we keep the traditions of the factory, we taste wines which were considered as model and try to get the best to bring it to our production. From the other side, our company for more than 10 year has been following a way of innovations; we replanted vines, improved our assortment and implemented new technologies. We have an Australian consultant but it doesn’t mean that he just come and say what to do. His role is very important in design of our general strategy, first we made normal our current processes, it took much time and forces, and now we started another work — to get a proper style, to find new decisions and to become better.

MWH: Roman, it looks like you keep learning even though you are the chief wine-maker. Are there some people whom you could call Teachers?

RN: Sure, there significant persons. From the very beginning it was Alexander Dmitrievich Karpenko, by the way the signature that you can see at the labels of «Zvezda Tamani» is his. And John, our consultant.

MWH: Well, and now you can feel yourself a Teacher giving a good piece of advice to the students starting their study in our Academy of sommelier on the 13th of May. How they can become professionals in the wine world?

РН: The most important thing is to develop professional erudition. It is necessary to be acquainted of every process in the world, news and changes. They should be interested in getting information and improve their knowledge all the time. Another important thing is personal involvement when your work becomes your hobby, it is vital to surround yourself with things and events which help in your job. Formality is not helping in wine-making. And the third rule of a good wine-0make is to love wine. Not only taste but drink it, make a part of personal culture implement it into your life.

MWH: Thank you for your words, let’s do it! And we wish you good luck in your wine way of the Don region. You are always welcome to our Academy!

Customers of alcohol will be threatened by calories

Government of Great Britain invented an original method of decrease of alcohol consumption in the country.

It must have a significant effect to women. The idea is to show the calories content at the label of a drink. It is supposed that this information would make the over-drinkers think about the consequences.

There is an agreement to sign contracts with sellers of alimentary products and alcohol drinks which will oblige them to mark this information of the labels.

A public poll showed that 50% of responders are acquainted of the calories content of a cheese-burger, and only a third part knows the calories content of a glass of wine.

For information: a glass of wine of 175 ml has 130 calories, the same as two cookies. A pint of beer (0,568 l) contents 250 cal, like a piece of pizza. A doze of a strong drink of 25 ml has 56 cal, more than in a portion of coffee with cream (47 cal).

Besides, drinkers normally use to eat snacks with high calories content like chips, salted peanut, burritos, so their monthly consumption of calories is in average to 2 000 calories more, that those who doesn’t drink alcohol, that is the equivalent of 38 roast-beefs.
